Although we have tried to make the program fee as economical as possible, we understand that some participants will need financial assistance. We encourage all participants to fundraise to subsidize the cost of their trip. GSDE will encourage, advise and support you in whatever way it can. However, it cannot directly raise the funds needed for an individual to carry an expedition.
It is possible to raise funds quickly, but you do have to organize your time and be committed. Fundraising doesn't just involve writing vast amounts of letters to businesses and grant providers; it can also be extremely fun.
When your application is accepted for GSDE program, you will immediately receive the program orientation package. The package contains a GSDE handbook and fundraising ideas. The fundraising information includes advice on how to organize fundraising, letter to organizations and grant providers who can donate for your volunteer program. We will be happy to give you an example fundraising letter on request.
The following are useful fundraising ideas:
1. Many of our participants (especially students) would like to lower their costs... if only slightly. As stated above, many churches and civic groups are willing to assist individuals. It's simply a matter of asking. Don't be shy! You are asking for people to support a good cause and you'll never know if they are willing to support you if you don't ask.
2. We also recommend setting up your trip as a work-a-thon. The basic concept is the same as a walk-a-thon or bike-a-thon where one solicits pledges for miles.
3. Some college groups recommend hosting a dinner for faculty, staff, students, and even alumni to raise money. In many cases the college itself or individuals will host the dinner and guests pay to attend. Consider inviting knowledgeable speakers in your area to present an educational and dynamic program for the evening. Or better yet, have trip participants speak about their experience from past years, show their pictures and stories, and talk about what they are looking forward to this year.
4. College groups have also had success with events like talent shows. For a talent show, ask students and teachers alike to participate (singing, dancing, reading poetry, playing an instrument, etc) By publicizing well and charging an admission fee, you will not only raise some money, but are guaranteed to have a good time.
5. Auctions are a wonderful way to tell the larger community about the trip and raise money at the same time. Some groups have put together a traditional auction where participants donate or solicit auction items. Other groups have chosen to have a more specific theme like an art auction. Ask students, professors, administration, etc to donate art that they own or have created. With some good appetizers and good items to bid on, you are sure to raise both awareness and money for your trip. |
