Internship Program
GSDE offers Kenya, Malawi, Ghana, and Guatemala internship opportunities for students and professionals in areas of community development, health care, environment studies, nature conservation, teaching, and business management all year around. The internship program provides interns with practical skills and experience through their placement in their field of study.
Location of internship placement: Internship placements are located in rural and urban areas.
Accommodation
Interns stay with host family who live near their placement or stay at a youth hostels or guest house.
Language requirement
English language – English language is used in all the African countries where we work. In Guatemala, Spanish is the main language but English is also spoken by lots of people.
Health
GSDE accepts no responsibility for costs that can arise from illness and/or accident incurred during the internship. A certificate or a letter of fitness, dully signed and stamped by a qualified doctor, must be submitted by the intern before starting an internship.
Internship placements
Kithumu Hospital – Located in a beautiful location in Muranga, 1.5 hour from Nairobi. The placement needs, medical doctors, nurses and nutritionists and student interns
Kiaruhiu Farm – sustainable agriculture farm worker or a researcher with a small scale family owned tea and diary farm located near at the slopes of Mt. Kenya
Shauri Yako Community Youth Support Centre (SYSC) – This placement is located in Nyeri town, 40 minutes from Mt. Kenya and 15 minutes from Aberdares National Park. Shauri Yako is a very poor community with enormous development needs, it provides a great chance for hand-on development skills. SYSC provides integrated youth, community development programs and HIV/AIDS intervention in Nyeri, Central Kenya. Develop a community resources centre, community development need assessment, research, project evaluation, identify donor, data base design and maintenance, write funding proposal, pottery and craft business plan. Tushauriane Shauri Yako Women Self-Help Group (TSWSHG) – Location, Nyeri. This is one of the communities where women and children are highly underprivileged, TSWSHG is a community based organization formed to support and empowerment women. Work includes organization capacity building, project designing, tie and dye income generating project, business plans, grant proposal writing, find micro-credit services, evaluation, research and HIV/AIDS (VCT) Voluntary counselling and testing centre.
Githumu Secondary School – A public secondary school located in the beautiful rural Muranga farming community. This placement needs teaching Assistant, music and arts teacher volunteers and student interns.
Kangaroo Brand – A shoe polish manufacturing company located in Nairobi, Kenya. This is a suitable placement for business management students. Work in various departments of the company operations, sales and marketing, production and accounting and finance.
What is covered by your program fee:
Meals: Dinner and break fast, Nutritious meals which include local cuisine
Accommodation: Simple but clean and comfortable living space, a private room or sometimes sharing with fellow interns/volunteers. We suggest that if you can, bring your own sleeping bag and a mosquito net for your own personal comfort.
Comprehensive Insurance Coverage: GSDE offers a comprehensive, travel and health insurance coverage for all interns.
Program administration and support: GSDE Country Program Coordinator and staff selects the suitable placement organizations, provide full time support, work with local partners and host families to ensure that the interns receive good care and meaningful experience.
Airport pick:Our country staff will be on hand to pick you up when you arrive in the country.
In country transportation: GSDE cover your transportation cost from the airport to your placement. Volunteer will be responsible for other local transportations, i.e. if transportation is needed from work to your accommodation.
In-country staff support: The Country Program Coordinator will be available to assist you if you need help and will check with you often to see if you have any concerns and monitor your progress. You will be given a 24/7 emergency contacts for Canada and country staff before departure.
Pre-departure support: GSDE will provide a pre-departure briefing, orientation, country handbook and assist preparation as much as possible.
