Internship
Global Seekers Development Expeditions (GSDE) offers internship program in Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi, in the following areas:
- Sustainable community development
- International development
- Health care
- Environment studies
- Nature conservation
- Business management
- Teaching
The internship program provides interns with practical skills and experience through a work placement in their field of study.
Location: Internship placements are located in rural and urban areas.
Accommodation
Interns stay with selected host families who live near their placement or stay in a guest house or youth hostels.
Language requirement
English and Swahili are the official languages in Kenya. GSDE recommends a basic Swahili language and culture lessons for interns, but it is not a requirement.
In-country staff support: The Country Program Coordinator will be available to assist you if you need help and will check with you often to see if you have any concerns and monitor your progress. You will be given a 24/7 emergency contacts for Canada and country staff before departure.
Health
GSDE accepts no responsibility for costs that can arise from illness and/or accident incurred during the internship. A certificate or a letter of fitness, dully signed and stamped by a qualified doctor, must be submitted by the intern before starting an internship.
Value:
The program fee includes internship, room and board, (housing/host), Swahili language training, 24/7 in-country support, orientation and other direct program expenses. Participants pay for health and accident insurance, international airfare, domestic travel to point of departure from Canada and field trips and related fares.

Program fee:
3 months: $2845
6 month: $5845
Swahili language lessons: $ 480 (for one month)
P/s note that placements in big cities like Nairobi and Mombasa, will have an additional $ 325 per month because of the cost of living and transportation.
What is covered by your program fee:
For intern living with a host family - meals dinner and breakfast, nutritious meals which include local cuisine
Accommodation: Simple but clean and comfortable living space, a private room or sometimes sharing with fellow interns/volunteers. We suggest that if you can, bring your own sleeping bag and a mosquito net for your own personal comfort.
Program administration and support: GSDE Country Program Coordinator and staff selects the suitable placement organizations, provide full time support, work with local partners and host families to ensure that the interns receive good care and meaningful experience.
Airport pick: Our country staff will be on hand to pick you up when you arrive in the country.
In country transportation: GSDE cover your transportation cost from the airport to your placement. Volunteer will be responsible for other local transportations, i.e. if transportation is needed from work to your accommodation.
Pre-departure support: GSDE will provide a pre-departure briefing, in-country orientation and country handbook
In-country excursions - The GSDE staff will help the intern for in-country excursion, if needed at a fare price and also give advice on other excursions trips near the placement
What the program fee does not cover:
- Air fare
- Visa and passport
- Airport tax
- Beverages like, bottled water, soda and alcohol
- Personal expenses: such as snacks and gift items
- Museum and national park fees
